Resin bound installs are laid to a minimum depth of 15mm for Paths, 18-20mm for Driveways and 6-8mm for internal use.

Resin bound gravel paving curing time for foot traffic is 4-6 hours and 12 -24 hours for vehicular traffic.

What’s the difference between Resin Bound and Resin Bonded Driveway?

There are two different methods to install a resin driveway, Resin Bound and Resin Bonded. The Resin Bound method is a porous SuDS compliant method where the chosen aggregate is mixed in a forced action mixer with the two part resin. Once fully mixed the material is then hand trowelled onto the install base to a smooth finish with no loose stones.

The Resin Bonded method is a non porous install method that is also known as the scatter system. With this method of install a layer of resin is first applied to the install base and then the aggregate is scattered on top. Once the resin has fully cured the remaining loose stones are removed.

Of the two install methods the Bound method is better because the entire stone aggregate is covered in Resin whereas with the Bonded method only the bottom of the stone is in contact with the resin meaning there is potential for the stone to become loose.

When the aggregate and resin are mixed each piece of stone is completely coated in the resin. This means all the stones are bonded together with very small gaps which allows water to drain through the product through to the sub-base. We can lay your new driveway or path over existing concrete or tarmac. If you currently have a graveled drive or block paving we will need to install a new base for the Resin to be installed upon.

Our Resin bound paving comes with a 5 year guarantee, however the resin manufacturer suggests it will last in excess of 35 years. No, the resin bound system adheres to the SUD’s process making the surface fully permeable with no threat to the environment. Kerbing Installations

We provide a range of kerbing options for your driveway. These options are designed to not only retain your driveway but also to function as decorative and to add style to any driveway area.

Concrete Edging Kerb

Concrete edging kerbs are one of the most common type of kerbing available. They are available generally just the one colour, that being grey. They’re available in various sizes depending whether you wish it to finish flush with your driveway. Concrete edging kerbs are available with a sloped edge, a rounded edge, or a flat top edging. Generally, we always use flat top edging kerbs as a divide at the front of the driveway from the local pavement.

Brick on Edge

A brick on edge, is commonly used as a small retaining line for driveways against lawn areas and flower beds. A brick on edge is a block paving brick, laid on its side and bench the concrete. Block Paving Kerbs

block paving kerbs, are available in two different sizes generally. KL kerb which is a large kerb and a Ks kerb which is a small kerb. They are available in multiple colours with the two most common being brindle and charcoal.

Block paving kerbs are available as a rounded kerb and a slanted kerb. They are also available in a matching style to cobblestone and Tegula Paving.

Natural Stone Kerbing

Natural stone kerbing is generally made from hewn stone and squared off. You can also use cobblestone as a natural stone kerb provided it has the depth to allow benching in concrete. With natural stone you are limited with the option of colours however you are guaranteed that whatever colour you pick, that colour will remain throughout its entire lifespan.

Cobblestone Driveway Installations

The laying of cobblestone really comes down to what style you’ve chosen and what the overall appearance needs to look like. You can opt for a fan/wave style of cobblestone laying or you can choose a more traditional style laying it in an offset pattern.

An offset pattern installation of cobblestones can also be replicated using Tegula style or natural cobble setts normally made up with granite stone.

Having cobblestones laid on your driveway is not the cheapest option when compared to block paving in Dublin. The reason for this excluding the extra price for the materials is also the extra work that is involved when laying the cobblestones.

Unlike block paving especially if you are opting for a fan style, it all has to be laid individually and by hand with no replicating pattern which makes it difficult to lay at any great speed.

Cobblestone Driveway choose the right materials

Choosing to lay the cobblestones in an offset staggered pattern does speed up the installation process so an average driveway, you can save over two days work using this pattern style. A permeable driveway is a driveway that will let water drain naturally down through it with surface and the drain away safely through the foundation. This type of driveway is general required for SUDS regulations (Sustainable Drainage System) and to avoid the need for planning permission.

Here we will highlight the types and benefits of choosing one style a permeable driveway over the other. Regardless of the finished surface the base preparation is generally the same. Let’s first look at how permeable driveways work and what the base requirements are.

Permeable driveway functions by letting the surface water drain away back to its natural environment. The method by which this is done is called attenuation. The surface water is collected by the driveway and held in storage as its release back through the base and then back out into its own environment.

One of the biggest differences with the base installations is not just the depth but also the finished base the sub base material should have no fines in it this means you cannot use type 1 MOT and you should be using type 4 MOT hardcore. This type of foundation is significantly coarser and will allow the water to penetrate faster.

In effect if you think of your base and imagine it like a porous sponge. It will soak up the water and gradually releases back into environment over a period of time.

There is effectively three layers that will be applied during installation of a permeable driveway, top layer will be your laying course which is generally a grit stone instead of river washed sand. The next layer underneath this will be your permeable sub base which would be Type 4 MOT or similar to allow the water to drain down fast.

The next layer will be your base layer which will be very coarse and will have gravel mixed through it. This will allow the water to enter this area very fast and store it to allow a slow release back.

Now do we know what type of base installation will require we can look at what the finished surface will be. You have the option of block paving finish using permeable paving or you can opt for a gravel finish.

Permeable paving is very similar to having a standard block paved driveway. The biggest difference between the types of block paving is the edging which is designed to allow a bigger space between the gaps which is then filled with a grit instead of kiln dried sand. OUR DRIVEWAYS INSTALLATION PROCESS

Site Preparation

All our paving is laid on a firm, level and well drained base to ensure long term service and stability – getting the ground work right is essential.

Vegetation and top soil is removed to an approximate depth of 200mm-250mm across the area to be paved. We mark out this area with pegs or retaining boards and adjust their height to the required finished surface levels, ensuring that we allow a fall of 1:80 away from any buildings and walls for surface drainage.

We also make sure that the finished paving surface level is at least 150mm (two brick courses) below the level of any damp proof course. After excavation, we rake level to ensure an even depth and compact the whole area using a plate compactor.

Kerbs / Brick on Edge (if required) The next stage is to set up edge restraints around the area to be paved (these may include existing walls) using block kerbs or concrete edging. The kerbs or concrete edgings are bedded into 100mm of concrete, to the required level, with a 45 degree haunch up the side of at least half the block or kerb height. This is essential to prevent the blocks and the sand on which they are laid from moving.

Underground drainage, Aco drains or similar drainage including inspection chambers are installed at this stage if required. The area is then to be back filled with Type 1 MOT hardcore. (Type 3 Hardcore is used for permeable surfaces)

Sub Base Installation

Onto this, a layer of river washed sand (grit sand is more free draining than normal sand and is less prone to being washed out) is applied, to the depth of 50mm, and then compacted with a plate compactor. A second layer of grit sand is then applied, to a depth of 20mm. This second layer of sand is leveled to the correct falls.

Laying The Paving

The laying of concrete block paving should always begin from the bottom of any slope, preferably starting from a right angle or a straight edge. Working from several packs at a time is essential when using a mixed size product such as cobble styled paving blocks.

We place the blocks on top of the laying course, ensuring they are around 4-5mm above the desired finished level. Once all full blocks are laid, we use a mechanical block splitter or a Con-saw to cut the blocks required for the infill pieces or at the retaining edges. Once completed, we sweep the area and compact with two or three passes of the plate compactor.

Jointing of the block paving is preferably completed in dry periods. We apply kiln dried sand to the block paved area, then brush into the joints using a soft brush, ensuring the joints are filled fully.

We use the vibrating whacker plate on the paved area again, to push the sand into the joints. Once this has been done, we check for any gaps in the jointing and fill where necessary, compacting again afterwards if needed. The sand in the joints may need to be topped up for the first few months after the job is completed.
